MOTD: Monochrome Madness

There is something to be said about the glamour of a monochromatic makeup look and I am not alone in this sentiment as it seems to be a big trend currently.  I’ve seen so many gorgeous monochromatic looks on Instagram, YouTube, and in print ads, and  I’ve been particularly inspired to do this look by the Kristen Stewart’s newest Chanel ad and by my favorite makeup artist to watch on YouTube, Lisa Eldridge.

In lieu of my normal primer, I opted to use a long-wearing cream shadow as a base for this look. I wanted something that would enhance the sort of cranberry/wine color scheme I was going for, so I used Maybelline Color  Tattoo in Pomegranate Punk and applied it with a flat eye shadow brush all over the lid to just above the crease.

This particular shade is a little harder to blend but the brush helps.

Once I covered the lid with the shadow base I went back over the same area with a vibrant, metallic cranberry shadow.

To add a little dimension to this look I took a stiff blending brush and applied a matte deep red shadow through the crease and then a little matte chocolate brown shadow to the outer third of the crease.

Red Ochre through the entire crease with Cyprus Umber in the outer third of the crease (both from the ABH Modern Renaissance Palette).

To soften the edges of the read shadow, I took a matte, golden tan shadow on a fluffy blending brush and swept it just above the crease all the way up to the brow bone using small circular motions.

To further define my eyes, I applied a deep berry pencil liner to my upper and lower lashline and then went back in with a black pencil liner around the inner third of the waterline.

I smudged the lower lash line with a mix of the cranberry and chocolate shadows I used earlier and then finished the eyes of with mascara on the bottom and top lashes, and a touch of shimmery ivory shadow on the inner corners of my eyes.

In keeping with the color theme, I used a satin-finish cream blush in a deep berry shade on my cheeks and a berry/wine combo on the lips.

  1. I’ve definitely been into this since someone on xoV mentioned using MUFE’s HD cream blushes as both eyeshadow and blush on days she was in a hella hurry. The monochromatic look it creates makes you look like you’ve got your shit together enough to know what’s trendy. It was a late-summer staple and probably will show up on my face lots more through the fall!

    1. I saw that Bite Beauty has a bunch of multi-sticks out now for eyes lips and cheeks and I might go check those out. I’d like to do some slightly softer monochromatic looks as well. I used to have a NARS Matte Multiple but I lost it WOMP WOMP; I loved that thing!

      1. Everything I own from BITE is pretty intensely fragranced, I wonder if their multiples are too? I regularly want to eat my BITE lippies but I don’t know if I’d want them anywhere near my eyes.

      2. Yeah I have one lip crayon from them and the scent is a bit weird for me. I like scented stuff but idk, it’s like fruit loops or something lol. I do want to go to Sephora and see what the multi-sticks are like. I have to be careful about the texture of cream products on my lids since they are so oily. Where you around for the xoVain Annie days? She did a really fun piece where she actually ate Bite Beauty stuff lol.

      3. Yeah it’s definitely unapologetically candy-scented. And YES I think that was probably my introduction to the brand and I think of it every time I wear their lip gloss, which my brain is PRETTY convinced is actually real, goopy candy. 😉

      1. ColourPop is my mountain. There are so many options and colours I can’t test and the shipping is such a hassle in Canada that I’d pretty much be stuck with whatever I ordered regardless of whether or not I liked it… but by all accounts it’s SO GOOD.

      2. Ugh, I wish shipping outside the U.S. wasn’t such a hassle for people! When I sent Morgan some goodies to New Zealand we ran into all kinds of trouble it was so obnoxious! I sent Samantha something to Canada once and it wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t like she ordered something from me as a brand/business so I’m sure there are certain roadblocks there too! What part of Canada are you from? One of my best friends is Canadian!

      3. Cross-ocean shipping is definitely worse and my complaining will hands down be nothing compared to the headache and dessert of options Morgan has to deal with (although I will always love New Zealand as a) Middle-Earth and b) Oceania’s Canada to Australia’s US). (Fight me about it Australia.)

I’m from big-town southern Ontario and now live in small-town southern Ontario right on the US border where picking up packages from the States is technically just a matter of wait time. Sometimes it’s quick, but sometimes crossing over and back takes hours. The biggest problem now is that our dollar is back to being worth like, 75 cents of the American one so a US-only company like ColourPop charges me in US dollars (and my credit cards are definitely a little generous- with themselves- with the exchange rate on my bill) and I either need to take a whole afternoon to go retrieve it in the US or pay lots extra (and still in US dollars) to get it shipped to my house. And then I might get a surprise extra bill from customs. And it might take a month to show, depends.

WOW SO SORRY that turned into a rant. Canada is great! I even like living in small-town Canada, which I would have never expected! We accidentally got invaded by 1500 drunk Americans this summer! I’m having a really good hair day! Things are good!

  2. I love this look! Monochrome always looks so polished. This is stunning with your hair, and makes me kind of want to do green monochrome to go with my hair…
