Favorite Lip Products of 2016

I’m baaaaaaack!

Hi friends, I’ve been AWOL since the beginning of November but I’m back at it and ready to cracking in 2017. As I was thinking over the last year in beauty, I thought it’d be fun to go through what my favorite products for the year were. I initially set out to do it in one post, but quickly realized we’d be here forever if I did that, so I’m going to do this in installments over the next few weeks. Since I’m forever obsessed with lip stuff (seriously I have no less than 8 lipsticks in my purse right now), I thought I’d start there!

Lip Balm

Glossier Balm Dotcom

For me Glossier Balm Dotcom is probably my favorite lip balm of all time. It’s funny because it’s pretty basic to be honest, but I haven’t found anything that hydrates my lips as well without feeling to heavy or waxy.

Liquid Lipstick

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Bauhau5lipstick-2016-2

This color is the most gorgeous blue-based, bright pink shade I think I’ve ever worn. It leans a little purple but I love that and it does not budge at all! It is quite a dry formula, but you get used to it after a while and I’m willing to sacrifice a smidge on comfort for it to be long-wearing.

NYX Lip Lingerie in Exoticlipstick-2016-1

I honestly wasn’t super impressed with the shade range in this launch, but I saw this shade on someone and knew I had to have it. It’s a beautiful terracotta color that I think looks especially gorgeous on medium to dark skin tones. Wear on this is really good, I get a little bit of fading on the inner portion of my lips but otherwise it stays put! The texture is a bit mousse like but it sets really well.

Lipstick

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Sheer Rapturelipstick-2016-4

This is a perfect my lips but better shade for me and the formula is so smooth and comfortable on the lips. It also has a surprising amount of staying power given that it’s a more slippery texture.

Maybelline Color Sensational Matte Lipstick in Lust for Blushlipstick-2016-5

Lust for Blush is one of those lipsticks that I would see on other people and assume it would be too light on me. I finally broke down and bought it this year, and the color is actually great on my skin tone. It’s just a very pretty, soft, rose shade that also makes for a really nice cream blush as well. I also really love the matte formula from Maybelline, so comfortable to wear and long-lasting with just a little bit of transfer.

MAC Viva Glam Lipstick Ariana Grande 2lipstick-2016-3

I’m not usually a fan of the colors in the Viva Glam launches but this is a gorgeous lilac shade that is light enough to be different from my usual purple (MAC Heroine) but not so light that I can’t pull it off. I wore this almost every day for a couple of months.

Karen Murrell Lipstick in Rymba Rhythmlipstick-2016-7

I got this from a friend during an international swap we did for xoVain and I am OBSESSED with it. I sometimes feel weird about orange-reds on my face but this shade strikes the perfect balance. The formula wears well and is super comfortable and it smells like cinnamon candy which I love. It’s got a balm-like texture so it can been worn sheer or built up to full opacity.

Maybelline Color Sensational Bold Lipstick in Rebel Pinklipstick-2016-6

This lipstick got sent to me by Maybelline for an article for xoVain and I am obsessed with it. I’ve tried two other shades and this one is the best as far as opacity, consistency, and wear and it’s such a lovely hot pink. The finish is matte but comfortable as well!

lipstick-2016-9
Top Row L to R: Ruby Woo (I couldn’t stand the open space there haha), Rymba Ryhthym, Rebel Pink, Lust for Blush. Bottom Row L to R: Sheer Rapture, Ariana Grande II, Bauhau5, Exotic

Honorable mention goes to MAC Ruby Woo, MAC Heroine, MAC Flat Out Fabulous, and NARS Audacious Lipstick in Anna. I didn’t add these to the list for 2016 because they are pretty much staples for me at this point so they’d basically be on the list every year!

What were your favorite lipsticks of 2016?

  1. 2016 was a big year of rediscovering my stash. I had picked up NARS’ Audacious in Natalie and KvD’s Studded Lip lipstick in Lolita based more on name recognition than anything else (dumb, dumb decisions) and kind of didn’t wear them for a hot minute until I realized I had over 30 lipsticks and I should probably start using more of them… anyway they became my summer and fall mainstays.

  2. I can’t believe I STILL haven’t bought one of the new Vice lipsticks. !!?? Rapture’s on my short list! My most-worn last year : prrrrobably Vasanti Gel Matte “Drunk In Love,” Estee Edit “Marooned” matte (so effing great I can cope with the icky vanilla scent), YSL Rouge Pur Couture Matte “Grenat Satisfaction,” Bite Amuse Bouche “Eggplant” and “Sour Cherry.” On the shopping list : another YSL in “Alternative Plum” and an Armani Lip Magnet, probably in “Attitude.”

    1. I’ve only purchased the sheer formulas from the Vice line but they’ve all been great. Perfect for when you want a non-matte option! I need to stop buying lipstick really but I am obsessed lol!

  3. Well, Colourpop lippie Stix in Tootsie is definitely one I wore most reliably. In Colourpop Ultra Satins I’d say Privacy Please and Littlestitious are my favorites. I got some of the UD Vice lipsticks as presents and Big Bang is the most gorgeous fuschia ever. I love Conspiracy also, so the metallic formula is obviously a hit with me.

  4. Great list! I’m really enjoying the essence lipsticks for $3 a pop, a satin finish, and gorgeous nude colors that I may have used as a blush a few times. Also like the NYX lip butter and did try a Milani metallic liquid lipstick. The Milani was a bit drying but was a great color! Glad to have it to my collection. I tend to go budget, but want to start adding some good lipsticks to my collection!

    1. I love NYX Lip Butter! Honestly the drugstore has really added some great options too so you don’t necessarily have to shell out more. I am a MAC lipstick devotee though which works out okay because they are more mid-range as far as price point, and they do that thing where if you bring them back 6 empty containers you get a free lipstick.

  5. Tamara! I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to finally check out your blog!
I love all those lipsticks, and I love how varied the shades are. I think I already posted some of my favourites on instagram, and I’m always having a hard time picking favourites anyway, but the Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 01 (do you like that one? I feel like it would be stunning on you), UD Bad Blood, 3ina liquid lipstick in 500, YSL Rouge Pur Couture matte lipstick in 203 (so far these were all reds), MAC Mehr, Colourpop Matte X Lippie Stix in Trust Me (another red), Cami, and Chateau, the NYX Matte Lip Creme in Cannes, and the NYX Lingerie in 02 Embellishment!

NARS Anna, Bauhau5, MAC Heroine and Ruby Woo are forever favourites from previous years for me as well! I love that we have different skin tones but somehow love so many of the same lipsticks! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi bb! I’m glad you decided to check it out! I go through phases each year of only wanting to wear particular shades but I really do like reds especially. I have not tried the Sephora Cream Lip Stain yet, I’ve heard so many good things but I keep forgetting about it! Do you have the new version of Bad Blood or the older one (pre-Vice)? Do you have any problems with feathering? I picked up Bad Blood before they revamped and launched the Vice Lipsticks and it feathered a lot on me.

You were the reason I tried Bauhau5 in the first place! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Hey tanderson,
UMMM!!!!!! Definitely amazing blog. Although, All the lips products list is really awesome but MAC Viva Glam Lipstick Ariana Grande 2 is really nice with me. Whatever, Thanks a lot for your backing mind. See you again.

  7. I am definitely adding these to my list to try! I am so thankful I found your blog! I loved reading your articles on XOvain! I really missed your insight! (And just everything in general about that site…)
